FLOWER PRESSING

Pressing flowers is a timeless way to capture the beauty of nature and preserve it for years to come. Whether you want to create unique artwork, decorate cards, or simply hold onto a memory from your time at The Flower Belt, a flower press is the perfect tool.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get the best results when pressing flowers.

1. Choose Your Flowers Carefully

The first step is selecting the right blooms. Pick fresh, dry flowers that haven’t been dampened by rain or morning dew. Flatter flowers are ideal for pressing.

2. Prepare the Press

Most flower presses come with layers of cardboard and blotting paper. Begin by placing a sheet of blotting paper on top of the cardboard base. This will help absorb moisture from the flowers and protect their colour during pressing.

3. Arrange the Flowers

Place your chosen flowers onto the blotting paper, either face down or in the position you’d like them preserved. Gently spread out petals and leaves with tweezers or your fingers so they don’t fold or overlap. Remember to leave space between each flower to avoid them sticking together.

4. Layering for Best Results

Once your flowers are positioned, place another sheet of blotting paper on top, followed by a layer of cardboard. If you are pressing multiple flowers at once, you can repeat the process in layers.

5. Tighten the Press

Secure the top of the press and screw it down evenly, tightening each corner gradually. This ensures even pressure across all flowers and helps them dry flat.

6. Drying Time

Store your press in a warm, dry spot for 2 - 4 weeks. Thinner flowers may be ready sooner, but bulkier varieties need more time. Check your flowers occasionally, and if the blotting paper feels damp, replace it with a fresh sheet. If needed, place heavy objects such as books or wine bottles on your press.

7. Finishing Up

When the flowers are fully dry, carefully remove them from the press. Handle them gently as they’ll be delicate. Store them safely in a dry container until you’re ready to use them for your chosen craft or display.

Flower pressing is a beautiful, mindful activity that turns wildflowers into lasting treasures. With just a little patience and care, you can create pressed flowers that stay stunning for years, ready to use in artwork, gifts, or keepsakes.
